An Evening with Jesse Saperstein, Author

Last night I had the pleasure of listening to a talk given by Jesse Saperstein, author of Atypical: Life with Asperger’s in 20 1/3 Chapters.  Mr. Saperstein spoke about some of his challenges growing up on the spectrum as well as how he’s fared as an adult with Asperger’s.  He was candid and engaging when recounting [...]

PBS's Arthur to Feature Aspie Character

Thanks to a tweet by @sarawinter_ I learned that the PBS Kids show Arthur will be airing an episode featuring a character with Asperger’s Syndrome.  If my research skills haven’t failed me, the episode, titled “When Carl Met George,” should be shown on April 5.  Here’s a clip from the episode that offers a very kid-friendly [...]

We’ve Been Here Before

Due to a rare burst of energy, along with a rare, yet perfect alignment of the stars, we took the kids to the playground today.  We figured it would be empty (like it usually is) so we took the soccer ball intending to let them practice a little.  A little boy from down the street came [...]

Field Trip

Gus’s class had a field trip today. The nice thing was that the orchard we went to was very close to us.  So he didn’t have to go to school – I took him straight there.

When we first got there, it was rough going.  He had his agenda in mind and was very upset/impatient that he [...]

Joining In

There was a slip-n-slide. Today was one of those hot, muggy days when the air feels like oatmeal in your lungs. The floors felt like they were coated with dew. Yuck! Gus came home from school completely exhausted, played on the computer for a while during the first rain storm of the [...]

The Autistic Child and Social Functions – Preparation is the Key to Success

Social functions can be a nightmare for parents of a child with autism (and for the child for that matter). But they don’t have to be. With enough planning and preparation, your child can attend those functions with relatively few problems. Yesterday, we took Gus to an engagement party for a good friend [...]

The Gift Beneath the Mother’s Day Present

Last Thursday, Gus’s school had a plant sale for Mother’s Day. I gave him $20 and told him he could spend up to $5 on whatever he wanted if he saw something he liked. That afternoon, he came home with a 2 foot tall plant – a tomato plant to be precise – and [...]
