Not Even Illness is Typical

Image from Wikimedia Commons

Earlier this week, I kept Gus home because he had a cough and scratchy throat.  He had no fever, but his voice sounded terrible, and he had a weird rash I wanted the doctor to look at anyway.  He had no fever at the doctor’s office, and fought like a madman when the assistant tried to culture his throat, but in the end, the doctor said he could go back to school.  The culture in the office seemed negative, his throat wasn’t particularly red, and with his history of eczema, that accounted for the rash.  He went back to school yesterday – still no fever, just a cough.

This afternoon, I got a call from the doctor’s office.  Apparently the culture that went to the lab came back positive for strep!  He still has no symptoms; as a matter of fact, he had a better day at school today than yesterday.  I don’t know how it’s possible, but I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.  Nothing else about Gus is typical, so this manifestation (or non-manifestation) of strep can just get added to the list.

So he’ll be getting another 4 day weekend since he has no school on Monday.  Sick leave with no symptoms – how lucky is that?

Have you ever heard of strep throat manifesting this way?  Share in a comment if you have – I’d be interested to know!

  • Hi,
Every time I’ve had strep, I don’t have a sore throat, and have a very mild fever. But I get SOOOOO tired. So, many not as atypical as it seems. Either that, or Gus and I are both unusual. Heehee!!
