Friday night, Gus started bowling for the winter in a special needs league. I was pretty shocked at the sheer number of people – roughly a hundred from about ages 6-21. He had a wonderful time while he lasted.
There were four members listed on his team, but only three showed up. Aside from Gus there was one little boy who was quite exuberant and what a powerhouse! The other team member was quieter and more serious. He apparently hadn’t been playing long, but was very precise. I was floored when he made a spare off of a split (two pins on the far right and one on the far left). Then there was Gus. He started off pretty strong with a strike, but each frame left him increasingly tired. By about the seventh frame, he was using two hands to sort of roll the ball between his legs; by the eighth frame, he was using the ramp. He didn’t want to stay for the second game.
Two things struck me. First, these boys, who had just met and who have generally compromised social skills, were so supportive of each other! They were having a great time just cheering each other on! The other thing that struck me was that even though Gus was exhausted, I can see how this will help his hand and arm strength enormously. It’s all very exciting.
So that was the start of our weekend. Do you have anything new going on for the winter season?
